xelex goes from zero to hero in MOUZ comeback to make EWC quarters over GamerLegion

MOUZ have limped into the quarter-finals of the Esports World Cup after surviving a messy series against GamerLegion, needing all the rounds and more to edge out a 2-1 victory (13-11 Mirage, 19-22 Ancient, 13-11 Nuke).

It was a feel-good victory for Oldřich "PR" Nový against his former team, but not one for MOUZ, who looked a shell of the team that won BLAST Bounty Season 2 Finals mere weeks ago. Sloppy mid-rounds and errors plagued Dorian "xertioN" Berman's troops throughout the series, which they still could have closed in two maps if not for a miserable map from Adrian "xelex" Vincze on Ancient.

The Hungarian rifler went 3-11 in opening duels, got one multi-kill, and ended the map with a 13-35 K-D (after going 11-12 on Mirage), but deserves plaudits for his mental resilience as he outdid himself on Nuke by finding seven multi-kills and finishing on a 27-15 K-D, leading the charge in a CT side comeback from 2-10 down to clinch MOUZ's spot in the quarter-finals against FUT.

MOUZ battled to a 6-1 lead on Mirage thanks to some solid lurk kills from Lotan "Spinx" Giladi and multis from an aggressive xertioN who kept worming his way into the defenses, but those plays stopped catching GamerLegion off guard as the half wore on.

A triple from Milan "hypex" Polowiec's AWP to hold off a B hit, followed immediately by a masterful quad-kill by Timur "FL4MUS" Marev from under Balcony, became the catalyst for GamerLegion's recovery to tie the game at halftime.

MOUZ soon found the game slipping from their grasp as their pistol and conversion after the swap was answered by five from GamerLegion, who were knocking on the door of victory with an 11-8 lead following a few A attacks. But again, Spinx and xertioN found impact as GamerLegion's pivot to hitting B failed, and an attempt to go back to A in the last round was cut down by a great quad-kill by xelex.

However, MOUZ's academy promotee went from hero to zero as Ancient got underway, having near-negligible impact and leaving xertioN, Ádám "torzsi" Torzsás, and PR to do the heavy lifting. That trio kept their side in the fight in what became a messy half, helping them walk away with seven rounds despite needing to fight back from man disadvantages round after round.

GamerLegion won the pistol and denied MOUZ's force-buy to tie the game, only for a masterful Tec-9 quad kill by torzsi to win what looked to be a game-changing eco as MOUZ pushed up to an 11-7 lead. But xelex's struggles continued as GamerLegion fought back to force overtime, and the rookie couldn't find his footing at all as the game devolved further. GamerLegion eventually emerged the victors, 22-19, after a 1v2 from hypex and 1v3 from Sebastian "Tauson" Tauson Lindelof punished MOUZ's sloppy play.

GamerLegion carried momentum into Nuke, where they put up a stalwart defense against a limp MOUZ attack. Avenues were closed Outside and at Ramp, and MOUZ overplayed their hand in a few advantageous positions to end the half staring down a 2-10 deficit.

After having a great showing on Ancient, it was PR who struggled for MOUZ this time around. And xelex, who ended the second map with a 3-11 opening kill record and 13-35 K-D, showed incredible mental tenacity and deserves immense credit as he supercharged a MOUZ comeback.

The young Hungarian rifler found multi-kill after multi-kill to spur on a nine-round charge for MOUZ to take the lead, and GamerLegion's sole round win was immediately answered by two from MOUZ to clinch victory.
